I was working the day
shift when I was dispatched to assist a volunteer fire department with traffic
control. A trailer at the back of the park was on fire.
When I arrived
the smoke had reached the highway. I looked down to the end of the trailer park
and found that there was nobody at the fire but me! I ran to the burning structure.
Smoke was billowing from around the closed door. The fire had broken through
the wall of the trailer and was consuming the little home like a lion consumes
it's prey. Someone yelled to me that a person was inside this hell on earth.
I attempted to break the door down, it opened out rather than in.
I hit the door over
and over and....
The smoke was getting so thick that the trailer was getting hard to see. It
got to the point that I couldn't open my eyes anymore my lungs were full of
smoke and I couldn't breathe.
I found the glass in the door and broke it so that I could try and reach into
the flames and unlock it. The flames and smoke took me to the ground, I laid
in the yard for a second
and tried again. Again I was taken to the ground. I remember praying, Dear God
get me some help!!!
When the fire department
got there a firefighter was able to get in. After a short period of time he
drug a body to me and I then drug the body into the yard. The man's melted flesh
stuck to my hands. I will never forget that odor. We later found his son inside
as well.
The firefighter and I were given medical treatment when the nightmare was finally
over.
I hope that someday the Lord will let those men know that I tried to save
them...I tried so hard.
