A Day's Work

You wear a uniform that's blue
And get respect from few
I wish you luck and safety in everything you do

You go to work everyday yet no one seems to know
You work in heat in sleet and snow
And go places no one dares to go

You're criticized at every turn
Quick to resolve and slow to burn
Respect or empathy is all you seem to yearn

If you do well no one seems to care
Yet if a mistake befalls you keeping your job is rare
Am I the only one who thinks this isnt fair?

The man you just pulled over is asking for a break
Drive like that in his neighborhood and a ticket he hopes you'd make
And then you have the other's who say your on the take

You put your life upon the line every single day
People would bellow with laughter if they were offered the same pay
Yet here you are again, another working day

Integrity, integrity is defined and read and said
So much in fact, at random, it pops into your head
Wondering from day to day how your children will be fed

You serve and serve and serve and serve 'til no ones left to service
Then one more shows up asking, hey "pig" can you serve us?
While you smile you wonder, where'd he get the right to curse us?

When those who question what you are need help from someone
Who's the first person they call to get things done?
No one ever called a lawyer when encountered with a gun

Your family hates your job and asks you to find another
Yet here you are another day doing your best to defend your brother
The job you live and die for, you know there is no other

Respect I give to those of you
Who are known as the boys in blue
And I wish you luck and safety in everything you do
